Dairy Market Concerns

Written by David Maloni | Sep 29, 2023 1:44:42 PM

Although the CME cheese markets have weakened as of late, that has not been the case with butter. For those keeping score, and I'd guess Bronco fans probably stopped keeping score at halftime on Sunday, the weekly average butter price last week was the most expensive in over nine (think: Andre Iguodala) months. Typically butter prices end the year lower than where they are at the end of the summer. But I would be remiss in not pointing out that the domestic milk cow herd is in a general state of decline. Readers might notice that the herd in August was the smallest in nearly two years and essentially even with the start of 2020. Funny what tight cattle supplies and inflated cow prices will do, eh?
