As the chart shows, average retail turkey prices this Thanksgiving are nearly 21% (hello, Roberto Clemente) below last year—even though wholesale whole-bird markets are up more than 40%. Contracts and timing might explain some of the gap, but the financially stretched U.S. consumer is playing a role too. Good news for the holiday table…maybe not great news for overall consumer health.
