The Government Shutdown: Trick or Treat for Markets?

But beware — things could get spookier next month if the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) ends up paused. (Yes, that’s SNAP the program… not the ’90s band behind “I’ve Got the Power” — though they might be onto something there.)

Because SNAP is federally funded but state-administered, the impact could vary — but one thing’s for sure: it represents a big chunk of grocery purchases as shown above. A disruption could rattle demand, especially for higher-priced items like beef.
