Speaking of expensive, the Datum FS Foodservice Commodity Index in August was the highest in 25 (think: Fred Belitnikoff) months. Perhaps more concerning has been the pace of the rise in the commodity basket this year as shown in the chart at top. 2024 marks the second strongest gain in the index for the period in at least the last decade. No surprise that beef trim, chicken breast and chicken wings are big drivers in this basket inflation but don't forget about table eggs and cheese which are up north of 35 percent since the beginning of the year.
