Avocado Trade

You know what else is on the decline? U.S. avocado production. Since the mid-2000s, domestic avocado acreage has dropped nearly 30%—about the same percentage as Dame Lillard’s three-point shooting when he’s off his game. Meanwhile, U.S. avocado consumption has skyrocketed, more than tripling in the same timeframe. As the chart above shows, U.S. avocado imports have more than doubled since the Dallas Mavericks (who could use some love right now) won their only Larry O'Brien trophy in 2011. For those keeping track at home—and you know I got you—domestic Hass avocado production now makes up just about 10% of the total U.S. supply. And with potential tariffs on Mexican imports looming like a last-second buzzer-beater, uncertainty in avocado availability continues to rise.
