Beef supplies may not normalize for years

Speaking of beef, as you and your mothers know, supplies are going to be limited this fall due to the historically small cattle herd in the U.S. But the tight supply situation won't be limited to the fall. History suggests that when the cattle herd declines it take several years for beef output to return to "normalized" levels. In the prior cattle cycle downturn, the herd peaked in 2007 and then went into a seven year decline. Beef production peaked in 2008 and remained below that year for a decade. Note that the sharpest beef output declines were when the cattle herd started to rebuild.
