Speaking of higher prices, I think its fair to say that price inflation played a part in the election results over the last 24 hours. Now its certainly debatable how much influence a President or party has on inflation but, make no mistake, policy matters. And inflation during 2021-2023 was one of the steepest for any President in four decades. But I caution the optimists here. First, as the chart shows, overall inflation over the last six decades has averaged stronger during Republican presidencies. Further, policies that include additional tariffs and a reduction in the labor supply are not typically viewed as deflationary.
