Markets Fumble

As we noted in a prior issue, dairy farmers cross-breeding beef calves have unlocked better margins, helping fuel strong milk output. That extra milk has leaned hard on cheese and butter. And for those keeping score at home (and you know I’ve got you), CME butter spot prices are down a whopping 44—think Cam Skattebo dragging tacklers—since the July peak.

But dairy hasn’t been completely immune to the protein boom of 2025. Dry whey has surged 53% since April, even with all that milk sloshing around the U.S. system.

We break down these dairy moves, the Trump tariff reductions, and why chicken markets may be carving out a longer-term bottom in the latest Commodity Kitchen Podcast episode. Listen on your favorite platform or click here.

With the kind of volatility we’ve seen this year in cheese, butter, chicken, and beef, innovative contracting strategies aren’t optional—they’re essential.
