Resilient Beef Demand

Fed cattle beef supplies have been much better than prior year since early April. Wait, what? Yes, heavier fed cattle weights, due in part to the lower feed costs and poor beef packer margins, along with slightly better slaughter have caused steer and heifer beef output from April through September to track a Klump Strong ("Hercules") 3.9 percent above 2023. At the same time the USDA choice boxed beef cutout has averaged ~1 percent above prior year at a record high signaling good beef demand despite the challenged consumer.
